Through exploration of color and its effects on the mind, as well as experimentation in mixed media, Ryan Stroup has created a mélange of works which include paintings, ceramics, and sculptures. His art has been materialized in a variety of sizes ranging from miniatures to very large paintings which require an entire wall. Many of his works portray great depth and several have also played with optical 3-D illusions. Nonetheless, Ryan’s work always has contained great attention to detail, no matter how subtle.

Over the past fifteen years, Ryan’s work has evolved from realistic landscapes and floral paintings, to contemporary expressions and modern ideas. Combining strong color with text and multi media, he keeps in mind the basic principles of composition and color theory to produce pieces that not only capture the viewer’s attention, but also appeal their individual interests, and staying true to pieces that he enjoys himself.

Recently, Ryan has been working extensively with contrasts of color and texture to generate bold, striking works. At the same time, Ryan has been researching color therapy and the way color effects our emotions as well as our physical bodies. With this in mind, he has worked with combining colors in direct correlation to the mood he works to develop. Several of the paintings in this show represent a focal point at which one can gaze while daydreaming or meditating, while becoming lost in thought through the color and its effect on the mind.

Ryan has shown in galleries throughout central Pennsylvania, including 2nd Floor Gallery, Gallerie 13, the former 10th Muse, Art Association of Harrisburg, Freehand Gallery, Lancaster Museum of Art, and various other venues. In 2004, Ryan relocated to Philadelphia where he exhibited a summer long solo exhibit in Galeria EsArte. In December 2006, Ryan had a major solo exhibit at 33 N. 3rd St. in Philadelphia’s Old City, as part of UWISHUNU’s artist showcase series. Ryan’s work has also been shown at Art Jaz, Absolute Abstract, numerous charity auctions, cafés, and retail stores in the area, and was affiliated with the Christopher Loftus Project. Ryan’s work can also be seen regularly at the 2nd Floor Gallery in Mechanicsburg, PA, The Unknown Artist in Annapolis, MD, and Nestology in King of Prussia, PA.
